How to Rollover a 401(k) into an Alto IRA

This guide explains how to roll over your 401(k) funds into an Alto IRA.

Step 1: Contact Your 401(k) Custodian

Inform your 401(k) custodian that you would like to transfer your funds into a self-directed IRA with Alto IRA.

Provide the following details:

  • Alto Account Number
  • IRA Type: Specify the type of IRA you are transferring into (e.g., Traditional, Roth).
  • Delivery Instructions: Refer to the instructions below.

Step 2: Request Your Latest Account Statement

Ask your 401(k) custodian or plan administrator to provide your most recent account statement. Alto requires this document to verify the source of funds. We will request this document once we have the check.

Step 3: Initiate the Transfer

401(k) custodians typically send funds via check rather than wire transfer. Please provide your custodian with the following instructions:

For Standard Mail

  • Make the Check Payable To: Alto IRA, FBO [Your Name]
  • Include in the Memo Line: Your Alto Account Number
  • Mail to:
    • AltoIRA PO Box 1141 Indianapolis, IN 46206

For Overnight Delivery Only

  • Mail to:
    • AltoIRA 500 11th Ave N., Suite 790 Nashville, TN 37203

Step 4: Notify Alto

Once the check has been sent:

  1. Email Transfers@AltoIRA.com to inform our team that the funds are on the way.
  2. Alto’s team will watch for the check and notify you once it has been received.
  3. Once received, we will let you know the allocation date and any additional steps needed.

Important Notes

  • Mandatory Hold Period: All checks are subject to a 4-business-day hold to prevent chargebacks. This hold is mandatory and cannot be waived.
  • Tracking Checks:
    • Alto cannot track checks sent by custodians unless you provide a tracking number for it.
    • To monitor the status of your check, request that it be sent via priority mail with a tracking number.
  • Wire Transfers: If your 401(k) custodian prefers to send funds via wire transfer, contact us at Transfers@AltoIRA.com for assistance.
  • Checks Sent to You Directly:
    • Do not sign the check.
    • Mail it to the appropriate address listed above.
