Buying Cryptocurrency
Note: Before you are able to buy or sell Cryptocurrency in your Coinbase wallet, you will need to make sure your account has funds. Click here for an article that walks you through how to fund your IRA.
- Log into your Alto CryptoIRA
- Click Trade Crypto at the top of the page or the purple Trade Crypto button to the right of the page
- Click on the purple Buy button
- Select whether you want to do a market or limit order
- Select the cryptocurrency you’d like to purchase by using the drop down menu or search by name or price (i.e. < 50 for all cryptocurrency that is less than $50 USD)
- Enter your buy amount for a market buy. For a limit buy, enter the buy amount and the price. Or choose MAX to buy the max USD in your Available to Invest balance
- If you’re satisfied with your order, click Preview Order and review the confirmation
- Read the Direction of Investment and click to agree. Click Place Order to submit your order
Tip: The amount field defaults to USD. You can click on the USD button to toggle between USD or cryptocurrency units.
Selling Cryptocurrency
- Log into your Alto CryptoIRA
- Click Trade Crypto at the top of the page or the purple Trade Crypto button to the right of the page
- Click on the purple Sell button
- Select whether you want to do a market or limit order
- Select the cryptocurrency you’d like to sell by using the drop down menu or search by name
- Enter your sell amount for a market sell. For a limit sell, enter the sell amount and the price. Or choose MAX to sell the max amount you have of the cryptocurrency
- If you’re satisfied with your order, click Preview Order and review the confirmation
- Read the Direction of Investment and click to agree. Click Place Order to submit your order
Tip: The amount field defaults to USD. You can click on the USD button to toggle between USD or cryptocurrency units.
Market vs Limit Order
| Market Order | Limit Order |
| An order to buy or sell an asset at the current trading price. The trade is placed and filled immediately and cannot be canceled. The trade takes a couple minutes to show up on your Dashboard and Transaction History. | Like a market order, an order to buy or sell an asset. As opposed to buying a given asset immediately at its current market price, however, a limit order allows you to set certain price parameters for your purchasing or selling preferences such that a transaction is only initiated once those parameters are met. Please note, pending limit orders are deducted from your available cash balance. |
Cancel a Limit Order
- Log into your Alto dashboard and click Trade Crypto
- In the Transactions section, click the Pending button
- Locate the transaction that you want to cancel; if the order has not yet been executed, its status will say Placed, and a corresponding Cancel button will sit on the bottom right-hand side of the Transactions dashboard.
- If you're sure that you want to cancel the transaction, click Cancel.
- You'll get a pop-up window at the top of your screen asking you whether or not you'd like to cancel the transaction. To confirm the cancellation, click OK.
Transfer Funds in Your Coinbase Wallet Back to Your Alto IRA
Note: Before you are able to transfer funds back to your AltoIRA, you must sell all of the cryptocurrency in your Coinbase wallet so that it arrives in your USD wallet.
- Log into your Alto dashboard and click Trade Crypto
- Click Transfer to begin the transfer back to your AltoIRA
- Select Coinbase Wallet from the Transfer From drop-down menu
- Select IRA Cash Balance from the Transfer To drop-down menu
- Enter the amount you would like to transfer to your Alto IRA
- Type your name as indicated in quotations and click Create Transfer
Transfers from Coinbase to Alto may take up to four business days
